VIDEO: House of the Dead 2&3 Return on Wii

On February 15th, 2008 by Gary Cutlack

Our final video update from yesterday’s SEGA Wii mega event is this, a rather sensationally gory pair of films showing heads disintegrating and zombie deaths beyond belief in the Wii remake of SEGA’s awesome arcade shooter. Not every Wii game has been sanitised for the protection of the children, as the lumps of brain you are about to see flying everywhere will prove.

Sorry about the background noise. Some loud people were discussing the housing scene in Bristol behind me while I played. It was quite distracting.

I would also like to apologise for the poor gameplay on display. It’s hard to play and record a video at the same time, especially when you’re standing to the side of the TV so the Wiimote keeps getting a bit confused and trying to eavesdrop on a conversation about Bristol housing.

The game looked great in motion, though - so much better than the slightly duff screenshots we’ve seen so far.

VIDEO: Ulala playing tennis in Sonic The Hedgehog’s Scrap Brain Zone

On February 15th, 2008 by Gary Cutlack

Another WE CAN’T BELIEVE OUR EYES moment from the Wii version of SEGA Superstars Tennis, this time featuring Space Channel 5 vixen Ulala - the Natasha Kaplinsky of the future - avoiding robot attacks while collecting rings in the Scrap Brain Zone stage from the very first Sonic.

This game is 100% pure SEGA mash-up joy. Do well here and Ulala even wins a Chaos Emerald for her troubles! Bonkers, mate. Absolutely bonkers. I think I was playing it wrong and you’re supposed to hit those energy bombs back. Still. It’s Ulala in Sonic and another moment of SEGA Superstars Tennis magic.

The level features the original Scrap Brain Zone music from the first Mega Drive game as well, if you’re interested and old enough to know what that actually means. The rest of Superstars Tennis has 80 classic SEGA tunes, many of which have been lovingly created by genius musician Richard Jacques - himself a bit of a legend on the SEGA scene, thanks to his work on such Triple A SEGA games as OutRun2, Metropolis: Street Racer and, going back a few years, Sonic R.

Incidentally, you can play the Wii version in three ways - with the Wiimote, a bit like Wii Tennis. Or with the Wiimote and Nunchuck, or just holding the Wiimote sideways and pressing buttons like we used to do in the olden days. And the last way is best - that makes it feel the most like the awesome Virtua Tennis 3.

VIDEO: Tails in the Virtua Cop mini game of SEGA Superstars Tennis

On February 15th, 2008 by Gary Cutlack

This is a sentence we never dreamed we’d be typing, even in our wildest SEGA fantasies - here’s a look at Tails playing Virtua Cop with tennis balls in SEGA Superstars Tennis on Wii. We even filmed it from “WiiCam” perspective, which puts you at the heart of the action like never before!

This mini event makes up one of the vast number of little party games that give you something else to do in SST than simply play tennis. If you remember the staggering Saturn version of Virtua Cop, this will bring up those goose bumps.

Other SST mini games we played included one based around Dreamcast game Chu Chu Rocket, where your shots direct mice into spaceships if you aim at and hit the right spot, plus a House of the Dead-themed zombie-avoidance game where you just run around the court trying not to get cuddled by zombies. Yes, cuddled - there’s no nastiness in this game, thanks to its family nature.

Incidentally, the DS version of SST was also at yesterday’s SEGA event. It has the same content and characters as the Wii game, only the graphics aren’t all 3D - the backgrounds are pre-rendered, with 3D characters running about on top of them. It looked rather stunning and is in no way a poorer cousin of the home versions.

VIDEO: Samba de Amigo on Wii

On February 15th, 2008 by Gary Cutlack

SEGA held a little gathering in a pub yesterday, designed to show off its upcoming Wii titles.

Obviously the game we’re most interested in is the Wii remake of Dreamcast rhythm action LEGEND Samba de Amigo, which uses the Nunchuck and Wiimote to replicate the original DC version’s maracas. If you’re too young to know what a Dreamcast and a Samba de Amigo is/was, Samba’s a kooky little music game where you shake your arms about in time to music, as if playing the maracas. It is/was also pure, distilled SEGA genius.

Here’s a look at the only level and song currently in a playable state:

Sorry about the video being at a bit on an angle, but you can’t really stand right in front of the screen when someone’s busy waving their arms about. And sorry about the background noise - people tend to stand around talking excitedly and reminiscing a lot at SEGA press events.

Incidentally, Samba worked just fine on Wii. The only slight problem people had was working out how high their arms had to be to hit the ‘middle’ maraca waving point - but that’s just your standard Wii control system learning curve problem. Wii Samba’s out this “summer” - SEGA wouldn’t be any more specific than that.

Portal song in Mario Paint Composer

On February 13th, 2008 by Bulent Yusuf

Have you played Portal yet? If the answer’s no, then this song won’t mean anything to you. Move along, nothing to see here. If you have, then you can appreciate the fidelity of this composition, made using Mario Paint Composer.

All of which makes us even more wistful for a Portal conversion on the Wii. An excellent game, one that could be infinitely improved with some Wiimote waggle action. C’mon Valve, you know it makes sense!

Claymation: The Legend of Zelda

Animated film has rarely been as insightful, riveting, and as… brief as this home-made effort. The credits are longer than the actual film! Anyone else seen any claymation tributes to their favourite games out there?

Time-lapse films of people playing on the Wii

On February 8th, 2008 by Bulent Yusuf

Wacky video fun for a Friday afternoon. Found via Kottke, this is a small collection of time-lapse films featuring people playing on their Wii consoles. It’s a mixed bunch - frat boys, party action, crazed freaks going all-out boxing - but deffo worth five minutes of your time.

Video: Compilation of finishing moves from Super Smash Bros. Brawl

On February 4th, 2008 by Bulent Yusuf

The bash-fest that is Super Smash Bros. Brawl has been out in the wild for a few short days, and the fanboys have been busy. They’re not content to just play it, they want to wring every last bit of nerdglee they can from the experience.

This video documents all the finishing moves from all the characters (including the hidden ones), some of which look pretty spectacular. If, however, you want to preserve the mystery for yourself… Well, best give it a miss eh?

Video review: Ghost Squad

On February 1st, 2008 by Simon

Our intrepid reviewer dons the face paint and balaclava for gun-totin’ action with Sega’s Ghost Squad.

Okay, he doesn’t really. He’s just wearing that ugly maroon coloured jumper he always seems to be wearing, day in and day out.

BUT never mind that! Is the game as Foxtrot-Oscar-Bravo-Tango as we’ve been led to believe? Watch the video and find out.
