Here’s our verdict on a new game starring the most revered character in Sega history… after Sonic, of course. So, is it a dream to play? Or is it your worst nightmare? Watch the video and find out.
Our verdict on Geometry Wars Galaxies. Is it a cack-handed conversion of an arcade classic? Or does it play like a retro shooter dream? Watch the video to find out.
Here at long last is the definitive verdict on Capcom’s point and click adventure. Is it a treasure trove of delights? Or is just fool’s gold for foolish fools? Watch the video and find out.
Here’s a video trailer for “World of Goo”, the new game from promising indie developer/publisher 2Dboy. Haven’t a clue how it plays, but it sure looks like fun. We particularly liked the Tim Burtonesque music and visual style.
The game was originally slated for release on February 14 (Valentine’s Day), but has now been pushed back to an unspecified date. Could this mean it’s being prepped for launch with Ninty’s WiiWare service in March? Only time will tell.
Former Midway employee Patrick Goschy is suing the Big N over an eight year old patent he holds for a motion-sensitive controller. Big deal, you might think, he can join the queue with all the other crackpots. Except, Goschy’s claim just might be stronger than most.
To prove his case, Goschy has released a video on YouTube dating back to 2000 where he demos the system on a Sega Dreamcast and Ready 2 Rumble. There’re aesthetic differences between this and the Wiimote, but the general application is practically identical. Watch the video and judge for yourselves.
We commence the Friday afternoon silliness with this spiffing video mash-up. It’s the military-industrial sci-fi of Halo filtered through the day-glo funland of Super Mario Brothers. And we think it’s brilliant.
But the fun doesn’t end there, oh no. This is an actual game that’s been coded by a barmy enthusiast. He’s promising to release it onto the internets in the next week or so, providing that neither Nintendo or Microsoft unleash their dogs of law. Keep your eyes peeled, pilgrim.
If you thought your Thursday morning couldn’t possibly get more exciting, then feast your eyes on this video of Wii Chess in action. The game will allow for all the features you’d expect from a modern chess game, including customisable boards and online multiplayer features. It’s also got the most irritating theme tune you’ll have ever heard.
We’re slightly puzzled as to why Nintendo thought this game was necessary, even by casual gaming standards. We’ve had the option to play chess online - for free - for a good few years already, and it doesn’t look like there’s anything new and different about this version. Maybe there’s a mind-blowing version of three-dimensional hyperchess (a la Asimov and Star Trek) tucked away inside as a bonus, but it’s not looking likely.
We like this hack, which basically involves hooking up a dance mat to a Game Boy Advance. If the video is to be believed, you can play a nice relaxing game of Pac-Man just be stamping your feet in the appropriate direction. Crazy stuff, but oddly compelling. Could it point the way towards Balance Board/Nintendo DS interoperability in the future?
Let’s kick off the week with this elegant and stylish case mod for the SNES. An anonymous engineer took their old console and made it portable, adding a screen, sound system, and a headphone jack. Looks lovely, though we’re racking our brains to think of a pun with which to end this post. “Morning wood” doesn’t quite cut it, can you think of anything better?
Wii hacks? Can’t get enough of ‘em. That little Bluetooth module inside each and every Wiimote has proved to be a blessing disguise, and each day brings a new and exciting development in DIY engineering. The latest and greatest is this studenty hack for the Sony AIBO (remember those?), with the Wiimote being used to control the useless dogbot to an unprecedented degree.
Dubbed the “Wiibot” by students at the University of Calgary, it’s a research project based on human device interaction. In the video above, they compare the Wiimote hack against standard keypad input controls; can you guess who comes out the winner?
At this juncture we’d make some fanboyish observation about Nintendo technology once again kicking Sony’s ass, but it’s late on a Friday afternoon and our mind is busy with thoughts of the pub. Woof!
