UK charts - week ending 8th November

It was always going to be the week of two big-hitters - Xbox 360 shooter sequel Gears of War 2 coming up against Sony’s great white hope, the innovative LittleBIGPlanet, with the former pipping the latter to top spot in the charts, despite Media Molecule’s create-em-up being out for two days more. But, perhaps slightly surprisingly, tucked in just behind those two in third position is ace portable puzzler Professor Layton and the Curious Village.
The success of the little DS game that could will probably be cause for cheer at Nintendo UK - particularly given such big-budget competition. Indeed, Layton comfortably outsold the likes of Motorstorm: Pacific Rift and Guitar Hero World Tour this week, and with an excellent marketing campaign likely to keep it selling throughout the winter months, this surely means we’re in with a great chance of seeing its sequel - Professor Layton and Pandora’s Box - sooner rather than later. Evidently, critical thinking is the key to chart success.
Leaving aside format preferences, it’s heartening to see three very different - and almost equally excellent - games rubbing shoulders at the top. It not only speaks volumes for the breadth of experiences videogaming can provide, but also shows that the public can recognise quality when it sees it.
