Innovative head-tracking feature removed from Spielberg’s Wii game

Boom Blox

What a shame. While it’s clear only a very small percentage of its purchasers would have been able to make use of the head-tracking feature originally promised for EA’s Boom Blox, it turns out that it won’t be included in the full game.

Speaking to Joystiq at the Nintendo Media Summit, the game’s producer Amir Rahimi admitted that the head-tracking mode would no longer be included in the finished game. It wasn’t ever intended as a significant feature, simply an Easter Egg for the curious. Yet even in this form, it’s not going to make it.

Which got us to thinking: why was it removed? One possible scenario is interference from Nintendo - perhaps wary of people messing about with their remotes, or maybe even planning to do something with the feature in future? Stranger things have happened, and it wouldn’t entirely surprise us if Nintendo leaned on EA to get rid.

EA refused to comment in detail, simply stating “head-tracking was something we considered including as an Easter egg in Boom Blox - however, we did not end up including it in the final version of the game.”

Hmmmm. I wonder if we’ve heard the last of this…

Not sure if Nintendo is behind that. I mean, EA is not exactly a tiny cottage industry. ;)

Yeah, I know that - even so, if it’s an unimportant feature that’s significant only to Nintendo, EA could well pull it to help relations between the two.

Somehow I don’t think Nintendo are behind this. They don’t have any specific reason to, even that “messing with Wiimote” idea doesn’t sound right to me.
