Virtual Console 07/02/08 - Kirby 64
What is Kirby? No, scratch that. Why is Kirby? The cannibalistic pink balloon offers no discernible talent beyond looking cute, and still he gets to be a playable character in Smash Bros. Yes, we know the reason behind that is that the people behind Brawl were behind his games, but we wouldn’t mind letting the air out of him for a while.
Having said that, he’s no different from a ton of other mascots whose only job is to look cute in as simple a fashion as possible. Japanese culture is stuffed full of the things. Dragon Quest’s most enduring character is a blue slime; a teardrop with a smiley face. And what about Puyo Puyo’s jelly bean blocks with eyes? You can’t get any simpler than that. Actually, Wikipedia informs us that when Kirby’s first game was being made, the pink blob was a hastily drawn placeholder, scheduled to be replaced by an actual character later. Somehow he survived That is even simpler than that.
If you’re not so bothered by mascots that took two minutes to design, though, then perhaps you won’t mind that this week’s one and only Virtual Console outing is Kirby 64 (1000 Points). It’s a platformer, it’s bright and colourful, and, this being a Kirby game, it’s incredibly easy. To be fair, it’s designed that way, and it’s nice that Nintendo are catering for the younger market, but if you’re over nine years old and you download this, shame on you.

Kirby’s Dreamland on the original Gameboy remains my most-played game, and is certainly one of the most iconic nintendo games for the console. I was very young when I got into the series though, so I would say that.
Still, I’m backing the pink puffball’s validity in the fray.

Kirby is one of the best video game characters out there. I have the game, and I feel no shame. I am also in high school.

Come one!!! Kirby is one of Nintendos mascots! Who cares if hes a pink fluff? he kicks butt!!! im over 9 and im not ashamed to play great games! Shame on you for disgracing me and all the other kirby fans out there!!!
