Weird pixellated Zelda and Mario art

A tricky one to describe this. An artist by the name of Jimiyo has taken the original, 8-bit forms of Mario and Link and crammed in hyper-realistic detail whilst still conforming to their original shape.

As you can see, the results are… odd. The Mario picture seems to work better, mainly because - and here’s where we don our Art Critic Hat - the colours are more distinct and the juxtaposition between realism and fantasy is more pronounced. Mario looks like the bastard child of Tom Selleck.

By comparison, Link looks pallid and creepy. What with those wonky ears and eyes, the freckles, the gormless smile, he reminds us of someone. Wait, wait, it’s coming to us… Ah yes, that’s right, Link looks like the bastard child of Alfred E. Neuman.
