Sega Master System added to Virtual Console

It’s official. The Sega Master System has now been added to Nintendo’s Virtual Console service. In the very near future we can expect 8-bit “classics” like Fantasy Zone and Double Dragon to be dusted off and given an airing on the Wii. Excited?
We can’t honestly say we are. Of all the consoles of yesteryear, the Master System is perhaps the weakest and least fondly remembered. Its library of games pales in comparison to the mighty NES, and what little they have will not have stood the test of time. Fact.
The only real significance of the announcement is that a) Sega are scraping the barrel as much as they can and b) it’s yet more evidence of the blossoming relationship between Sega and Nintendo. Why don’t they just get a room already?
So, that’s one vacant slot filled on the Virtual Console. What will the other one be, we wonder? Is it the original Game Boy, as widely speculated? Or will it be that other hand-held that nobody cares for, the putrid Game Gear?

Seriously? I grew up with both an SMS and a NES and enjoyed both thoroughly, for different reasons.
There are true gems such as Psycho Fox available for the SMS that most of the world never had a chance to play. And, probably due to SEGA’s strict licensing agreements, there was a purity of vision in the SMS titles rarely experienced in modern day systems.
I am excited about this. I really suggest you give it a chance and understand that if it’s a NES vs. SMS argument, that NES won. But we have them all now, on one system, so it’s a moot point!

@dr:
Thank you for your eloquent and impassioned defence of the SMS. You’re always welcome around these parts!
