Miyamoto sez: “What’s a Ratchet and Clank?”
O-ho! Ho ho ho! A-ha ha ha ha ha! Look up the word “Schadenfreude” in the dictionary and you’ll see a picture of us here at WiiWii Towers, rolling around on the floor and laughing our asses off. Well I am, at any rate. The girls are just sitting around, filing their nails and talking about Britney’s latest shame.
The reason for the merriment? Because a while ago, developer Insomniac had the brazen audacity to claim that Super Mario Galaxy lifted its best ideas from their Ratchet and Clank series. A bright spark decided to quiz Shigeru Miyamoto about this vexing issue, and his response?
“In terms of the spherical worlds and anti-gravity, we had the original idea as soon as we finished the development of Mario 64 and had been experimenting with it for many years, even on the N64. It’s not an idea we got from anywhere else. I’m sorry but I have to admit that I’ve never seen the game in question. Is it a PC game?”
Yep, that’s right. Miyamoto was soooo impressed by the blinding brilliance of Ratchet and Clank that he clean erased any memory of it from his mind, whilst simultaneously plundering the games for all they were worth. Alternatively, Insomniac were talking absolute rubbish and they’ve just been called on it. How positively embarrassing. Ha ha ha ha!
