Forget Japan - Super Mario Galaxy sells far, far better in US

What do we think of Super Mario Galaxy? S’alright. Thankfully, half a million Americans agree with our critical assessment, having bought as many copies of the game in its first week in the US, rocketing it to the top spot. According to Video Game Chartz, it’s now sold over 750 000, beating the next best-selling Wii titles (if you don’t count Wii Sports and Wii Play) in the top 20, Guitar Hero 3 and Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles, who come in at 439 000 and 129 000 total sales respectively.
As reported, it hasn’t done quite so well in Japan. Critics have been desperately clutching at straws, trying to pinpoint exactly what it was that led to such low sales - 385 000 after three weeks. Compare that to what New Super Mario Bros. sold in its first week - 911 000 - and that’s pretty disappointing.
Of course, Super Mario Galaxy’s opening week success pales when placed beside the juggernaut that is Halo 3. 2.9 million people bought a copy in its first week making it the fastest selling game of all time. Poor old Mario. Sob!
