Wii Sports nabs six trophies at the BAFTAS, world struggles to care

As a general rule, games award ceremonies are completely meaningless. With titles nominated and voted for by industry insiders, they’re not fooling anyone with their booze-guzzling and their backslapping. But it’s hard to suppress a grin at the news that Wii Sports swept the board at last night’s BAFTAS, picking up an impressive six gongs. The winning categories were Casual, Gameplay, Innovation, Multiplayer, Sports and Strategy/Simulation.

It’s not like the Wii really needed the acknowledgement of the BAFTAs - it’s doing mighty fine by itself thank you very much - but it’s clear that the UK games industry has finally taken notice of the changing landscape. It’s not about bleeding-edge graphics that requires military-grade hardware (PS£££ we’re looking at you), modern gaming is about accessibility and innovation, with a pinch of artistry thrown in for good measure.
