Animal Crossing to go Massively Multiplayer?

The latest issue of Edge magazine has such a spectacular rumour about Animal Crossing, our brains have melted and our ears have dropped into our tea and become soggy like digestive biscuits. Yes, that’s right, it’s a rumour so strong it can induce an acid flashback. Brace yourself:

“A Japanese source has confirmed to Edge that the upcoming Wii iteration of Animal Crossing is set to be a social networking MMO.”

We don’t have any further details, but by golly what more do you need? Nintendo embracing the massively multiplayer genre is such an electrifying proposition that it could power the whole of Britain for a year. Up to this point they’ve been ploddingly conservative in their online connectivity, so much so that they were in real danger of being seen as old hat unless they got their finger out.

In Animal Crossing they have the perfect candidate for an MMO; it already has legions of devoted fans, and it’s a welcoming environment for kids and adults alike. There’s no way in hell it won’t be a huge success. Make no mistake folks, we’ll be following this story very closely.

Well that’s the end of my life as I know it. I will actually have to physically avoid playing this for my own sanity. It’s like taking crack and springling heroin on top.
I wonder if I can take items from my copy of AC:WW on the DS into my house on the Wii though…
