Teacher uses Wii in the classroom

An American school-teacher, David Brantley, is using the Wii as an educational tool in the classroom, with particular emphasis on the Wii Weather and News channels to teach students about geography and current affairs. When interviewed by the Journal & Courier he said: “We do everything that’s traditionally done… But as soon as we’ve done a little bit and they know it, we can turn around and make it a game and have fun.”

We’d like to chime in and say that Brantley’s ingenuity and progressive-thinking deserves an “A+”. When we first saw the Wii channels in action we were impressed by their clever design, but had doubts as whether the typical Wii owner would actually use them. It turns out that they’re perfect as an educational tool, and here’s hoping that other schools will follow suit.

Given that the cost of a Wii is just £180 ($250 in the States), even a school with the tightest of budgets should be able to afford one, and kids will definitely benefit from it. Plus, the parental controls of the Wii browser mean that surfing the net will always remain a safe experience. Somebody get Jamie Oliver on the phone, we’ve got a new school campaign in the making…

[...] I am extremely interested in hearing if anyone has been using wii’s in their classrooms and how the reaction was from the students and other staff members.  I am very wary of this technology being dismissed as just a game with no educational opportunities.  So far i have found this site where the wii is being used http://www.wiiwii.tv/2007/10/07/teacher-uses-wii-in-the-classroom/ .  [...]

I just did some searches for flash games on grammar/language.

    Take a look at:

This site is for ESL/EFL, but the activities look really good…and it works well on the Wii. I did have to use the + to zoom…but it fit nicely on my screen.

This BBC site has many different activities…but I have almost always found that the activities are quality.

I searched for “grammar flash games”. These are just the first two that caught my eye…and I tested on the Wii. There were several others to choose from.
