Nintendo of Japan to give away free Wii Remote sheaths

Nintendo of Japan is to give away free sheaths* (!) to all Wii owners in Japan — sheaths that can be pulled over Wii Remotes, anyway, and sheaths that will protect Remotes from causing damage (no mention of preventing unwanted pregnancies) to Wii players’ homes and/or loved ones. An email was sent out to all Japanese Club Nintendo members this morning, explaining that the free accessory can be ordered by confirming the serial numbers of any Wii Remotes already in players’ possession.
As of mid-October, sheaths will be included with all new Wii consoles, Wii Remotes, and Wii Play bundles sold in Japan. The message is, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Nintendo adds: “The cushioning effect provided by the Wii Remote jacket[*] makes it easier to grip the Remote.”
*Actually, Nintendo of Japan doesn’t use the term “sheath”, instead describing its new piece of safety equipment as a Wii Remote “jacket”, but the Big N is responsible for those phallic Wii Remote images up there. So ha.

I’m just glad now whenever it slips out of my hand it won’t break the Wiimote, just whomever it hits.

The offer is also available to US owners. A notice was sent out last night and you can sign up to get the replacements at Nintendo’s website.
