Wii Sports wins award

Wii Sports

Games Industry have reported that a couple of Nintendo titles have been given gongs by Japan’s Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association. Wii Sports (which was sold as a separate game in Japan, and never bundled with the console) won the Grand Award together with Monster Hunters 2. I think this is a fantastic achievement, considering the game was thought as no more than a tech demo when it was first revealed. I doubt the game would have done as well if it was released outside Japan as a separate title, but what is certain is that without it, the console would not have been the success that it is. It’s the perfect game to introduce the console to the world, and a shrewd move by Nintendo. It makes it even more disappointing that there is currently no plans for a sequel.

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl’s fantastic sales were also acknowledged, as it picked up the Best Sales Award. I guess if a game sells over 4.9 million units in Japan alone it deserves some praise.
