TGS ‘07: Online demo for Arkanoid DS
Launched to coincide with the Tokyo Game Show, Taito have launched a series of minisites to promote their new line of DS games. There’s not really much to see at the moment, and they’re all written in Japanese, but it’s worth visiting the Arkanoid DS site to play a five-round demo of the game.
Overall it looks pretty decent, but we have a few reservations. For one thing, the playing area is stretched across both screens, which makes it long and narrow as opposed to wide and squat. Secondly, the field of vision is obscured for a split second while the ball passes from one screen to the next. Speaking from many years of playing Arkanoid, that split second will make all the difference.
Other than that, it’s business as usual. A robotic voice announces the name of every power-up as it’s collected, and there’s a thumping techno soundtrack that will have you switching off the sound in no time at all. Techno is so irritating nowadays it’s not even funny.
The other games being promoted with minisites are Cooking Mama 2, Exit DS, The Legend of Kage 2, Pet Shop Story DS, and Space Invaders Extreme. A playable demo for Exit DS will be made available shortly, and we can’t wait to get our grubby mitts on that one.
