University and Nintendo, your home away from home

It’s that time of year when students are leaving home in their droves and going to university. They’re understandably feeling a little nervous, so two campuses in the United States are trying to make the transition a little easier by giving them some Nintendo loving. We’re not kidding, this stuff really happens.
Exhibit A: A sports centre at The University of Illinois is inviting the students to play on their Wii at no cost. “The Wii was purchased to provide students with an opportunity to be physically active in a nontraditional way,†said a representative. They’re only allowed to play on it for an hour at a time, mind, so no doubt the Wii will function as a gateway drug onto other forms or exercise.
Exhibit B: Marshall University in West Virginia has transformed a section of its outdoor area into a tribute to Super Mario Bros, with blocks and pipes scattered around the area to allow students to do their thing. The high point was a “chain chomp … tethered securely to a tree.” We wonder if the faculty staff are encouraging students to take mushrooms too.
