Iwata: Wii is not a success, and no Wii Sports sequel… yet

Iwata dinner discussion

In the last couple of excerpts from Iwata’s dinner discussion, a few interesting comments have been made by Nintendo’s big cheese. In Tuesday’s update, entitled “The King and the Slave”, Iwata continues his crusade to confront complacency by stating that the Wii cannot yet be called a success. Although the 9 million consoles sold would seem to prove otherwise, Iwata merely states that this is a “good start”.

“It’s a good start. It’s been a good start, but it’s only the beginning…We want to have the customers continue playing. We want to continue coming up with new proposals to them, and have them keep playing. Only then can we say that we’ve accomplished our goals.”

He goes on to say that Nintendo will keep finding new way to grab people’s hearts (not literally, I hope), and keep people playing. It seems that creating a sequel to the popular Wii Sports (which is probably one of the most important games released on the console so far), is not part of this plan. Not just yet any way. In yesterday’s excerpt, entitled “Don’t do the Easy”, Iwata states:

“We’re not going to take such an easy way, not by including seven new sports in the game since Wii Sports has five. We’re not closing our doors to the possibility of a sequel, but it’s definitely not coming out soon.”

Wii Sports is the game that I have played most on the Wii, and is always the biggest hit when people play the console. I sums up what the console is all about perfectly, and although a sequel won’t have as great an impact as the original, I’m pretty sure many people would buy it without question. Iwata states that just developing a sequel with new sports would be too easy, and Nintendo should always try to push the boundries. I wouldn’t mind Nintendo taking the easy route on this one. The original laid the foundations for a great series of games, and if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
