Wii choose you! Pokémon set to take over the world…
It’s almost been 10 years since Pokémon made its début in the US. I doubt many back then would have predicted the effect that Squirtle, Pikachu, Bulbasaur, and the other little pocket monsters would have had on the gaming world. Nintendo’s latest generation of consoles have embraced the phenomenon with two Pokémon titles early on in their lives. Today, Nintendo of America have announced what an impact they have had since their release.
Pokémon Diamond and Pearl have notched up incredible sales. As it currently stands, Diamond is the number one selling game of the year on any system. Pearl isn’t far behind at number three. Together they have sold more than 3 million copies in the US alone, and this has helped boost sales of the DS, with the Wii and DS being the two best selling consoles in July for the US.
Pokémon Battle Revolution has been released in the US and Japan, and is sitting pretty at number five in the list of best-selling Wii games for the year. This can be attributed to the lack of competition, but the ability to link the DS game with the Wii gives owners of both consoles a massive incentive to get both titles.
I’m a Pokémaniac, and Diamond is a strong contender for my game of the year. Anything that can keep me amused for nearly 128 hours deserves some recognition. It’s just disappointing that like Super Mario, there only seems to be one “proper” Pokémon game per console. Let’s hope these games last the distance!
