Guitar Hero III - Wii will have online play after all

Contrary to earlier reports, the Wii version of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock will indeed have online play at launch, with downloadable content to follow shortly after. Prior speculation that the game would require future patching to be able to play online will remain exactly that: speculation.

The source of the confusion was a statement given by the RedOctane president Kai Huang in an interview with Pro-G. He told them that “there won’t be online initially for the Wii”, leading many to believe that he was referring to the title’s online gameplay mode.

We all breathed a sigh of relief, however, when a representative from RedOctane helped to clarify the situation. Huang was in fact referring to downloadable content being the problem, and not online gameplay as originally thought. They claim they’re working closely with Nintendo on a way to implement this feature, but so far there is no news as to what’s causing the delay or when the issue will be resolved.

Guitar Hero III will be released in Europe on October 24, and then October 28 in the U.S. Though it’s slightly irritating that downloadable content will have to patched at a later date, it’s good to know that the most important feature - online connectivity - will already be in place. As any fule know, games with a strong online component tend to sell rather better than those which don’t.
