Iwata urges Nintendo not to become arrogant

IwataAnother comment from high up in the Nintendo ranks, and this time it’s from Nintendo’s president, Saturo Iwata. In an interview with Level-Up, he speaks out on a fear that many Nintendo fans have had in light of their success over the past year.

“That’s probably Nintendo’s next obstacle is to not lose its internal energy and internal momentum. I believe my most important role right now is to prevent Nintendo from being in a company where people say, “Oh, Nintendo is arrogant,” “Nintendo has let its guard down,” or “Nintendo has lost its challenging spirit.” We want to avoid all of the pitfalls that can come from losing one’s momentum.”

I don’t actually think that Nintendo have been too complacent, and they make for an easy target in the current state of affairs. Their poor show at Leipzig, and the Tokyo Game Show, however, have led to criticisms that Nintendo are resting on their laurels, and as the console war is far from over, it’s a bit early to be lighting cigars and popping champagne. It is good, therefore, to see Iwata addressing this problem now, and going some way to ease our concerns. I think they have learnt their lessons from the GameCube, which I saw as a definite loss of momentum, and although it would have been nice to see more from them at the latest conventions, I find it hard to believe that Nintendo will again loose their drive in attempting to evolve videogaming.
