Better late than never - how publishers reacted to Wii and DS

Chin-stroking games site Gamasutra asked several analysts for their impressions on publishers’ responses to the Wii and DS. We all know that both consoles were met with slight apprehension when first announced, with some publishers not prepared to back that horse until they’d seen it in action. Now both are a phenomenal success, and more and more companies are jumping onto the bandwagon, but will it really lead to a brighter future?

Unsurprisingly, each analyst praises Ubisoft for being there from the start and gaining a strong foothold, while Take-Two and EA get criticised for not doing enough. While those that do hop on board are welcome, there are still fears that it will lead to a glut of bland or cut-down games that try to emulate PS3 and 360 titles. Key to the success of the Wii (and DS) name, agreed all, is the ability to innovate and make the most of its unique features. A no-brainer, for sure, but one we should be wary of given the software we’ve already been treated to.
