Nintendo to drop the DS browser?
Another day, and another Nintendo rumour. Although this one originated from a forum post, it’s one that does make some sense. Sales of the DS Opera browser haven’t been as plentiful as Nintendo would have liked, and so it is thought that they are going to stop production.
Since its release, it’s received a lot of criticism for its speed and lack of functionality. I have the browser, and although it is on the slow side, it’s one of my most used cartridges. I hope that they don’t give up on it just yet, as it’s a very useful addition to any DS library.
There are more rumours that it will be inbuilt into future DS Lites as standard software, but I can’t see this happening. Well, not for a while anyway. They can’t afford another redesign as the Lite has only just replaced the original DS, and due to the fact that the browser needs extra RAM (currently in the form of an expansion pak that fits in the GBA slot), it would be quite a substantial change.
So I guess that if you’re thinking about getting the browser, it’s better to play it safe and grab a copy now, just in case the rumours turn out to be true.
