Miyamoto: “Less difficulty, more fun”
In the latest issue of Famitsu magazine, Shigeru Miyamoto gives another one of those interviews where he expounds on his philosophy of games design.
With relation to Super Mario Galaxy in particular, there’s the stated objective of balancing difficulty with accessibility. Says the great man:
“So, regarding skill, I don’t think there is a ‘wall’ between casual gamers and hardcore gamers. The thing is, even core gamers will play ‘casual’ games. Essentially, we should be making games that are fun but aren’t difficult. In other words, trying to make a game fun using difficulty isn’t any good. With Super Mario Galaxy, while searching for new and interesting things, we’ve tried to build a game that beginners can play well without us underestimating them or going easy on them.”

Years from now, when earnest scholars pen their research on the history of videogames, they’ll be mulling over these words with much chin-stroking and nodding of heads. To say that games development can be needlessly overcomplicated is something of an understatement, and yet Miyamoto makes it all look so easy and straightforward.
Will Super Mario Galaxy be his crowning achievement? We certainly hope so.
