Team Ninja and Tecmo’s Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword for the Nintendo DS is looking very pretty indeed. This isn’t going to be some lame cash-in on the popularity of the “full size” versions, this is going to be a full-blown ninja epic that stands tall on its own merits. Japanese games magazine Famitsu has posted eight stunning screenshots of the game, which should be more than enough to convince you to dust off the old black pajamas.

Unlike the Xbox and PS3 versions of Ninja Gaiden, where each cutscene is presented in full motion video, the game will relate its story using manga-style visuals. This, together with the fact that the game will be played with the DS on its side like a book (as with Brain Training and Hotel Dusk), means that the whole experience will look and feel like an interactive graphic novel.

Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword will be released in the US on October 1, with a European release date yet to be announced. That gives you plenty of time to practice your triple backflip super dragon-slash, young grasshopper.
