File under “S” for Sacrilege: Nintendo DS emulated on the PSP

dspsp.jpgIt’s been a fantastic week for intelligent hacks. First, someone “tweaked” their iPhone so it could run NES emulators. Then, another guy “modified” his 360 so that he could play Halo 2 using the Wiimote as controller. But this, my friends, this one takes the chocolate covered hob-hob. It’s a Nintendo DS emulator for the Sony PSP.

Calm down, take a deep breath. Right now details are scarce. We don’t know how well it runs or the range of games it can play host to. Nor do we know how the PSP is supposed to work around features of the DS like the touchscreen and, yes, the double screen.

All we know for certain is the complete and utter illegality of it, given that the emulator reportedly taps into the PSP’s BIOS (Binary Input/Output System, if you care). For that reason, we’re not telling you nuffink about how to procure the software, so don’t even ask.

All that said, it’s a pretty exciting development. There’s Sony and Nintendo having spent billions of dollars in marketing and building their handhelds, each of them carving out a niche of the market, and along comes a prodigiously talented programmer to kludge the two together.

And since we’re in a poetic kinda mood, we’re savouring the metaphor; a handheld rivalry that’s so intense, one of them has literally gobbled up the other.
