There’s trouble homebrewing - Wii update scuppers SD Media Launcher
Wah! After posting yesterday’s news that Quake is making a homebrew leap onto Gamecube/Wii, we learn that Nintendo have fired a green shell directly into its path in terms of its latest firmware update. In other words, updating your Wii will break the SD Media Launcher. That’s the Datel product that painlessly allows you to play homebrew software through the Wii without any warranty-breaking soldering or the like, and hence the thing needed to play Quake.
A disappointment, for sure. Following that lead, however, we did then unearth what appears to be a solution to the problem afflicting booting up mods like GCOS, WiiKey and WiiFree. French-speaking Reppa was quick off the mark to find a workaround that should get everything in a more or less stable fashion. Having said that, it seems that everybody’s still reeling a little after this update, so if you’re a modder, we welcome a clearer picture of what’s going on and what is and isn’t working. We’ll also be burying our heads in the sand and pretending that none of this has anything to do with piracy, and that everybody doing it does so to play amateur-coded versions of Bubble Pop Blaster X.
