Shiny Video Review: The Nintendo Wii, Sony PS3, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS and Sony PSP pitted against one another

On July 25th, 2007 by Katherine Hannaford

I somehow managed to twist Gary Cutlack’s arm and forced him into his video debut for PSPSPS’s brother site, Tech Digest. If you’re a fan of his gaming-related rantings over at UK Resistance and gadgets and all-round thing-holding critiques at Idiot Toys, then you’ll love this video, where we discuss the pros and cons of each of the most-wanted gaming consoles of today. Enjoy, and try and keep the fanboy flamings to a dull roar, please!

Ryu vs Duck Hunt - Hadouken!

On July 24th, 2007 by WiiWii

Now this is awesome! If those pesky birds from Duck Hunt ever did your head in like they did mine, you’ll appreciate this all the more. It’s a video of Ryu getting mashed up with some soon to be crushed up quackers.

In case you’ve never hear of it, this comes from a custom-made fighting game engine called MUGEN. It allows homebrew developers to pit their favourite game characters against each other on any background they choose. It seems the only limit is the imagination!

Mario Party 8 - re-released on August 3

On July 24th, 2007 by Gary Cutlack

Mario Party 8It’s okay, kiddies! Kind old Uncle Nintendo has removed the nasty word hidden within Mario Party 8, and you’ll all be able to give Nintendo some more of your money on August 3.

The word in question was, of course, “spastic” - which is a perfectly common word in America, and all Nintendo should feel bad about is using an unchecked US translation. It’s only here in the UK that years of playground abuse has turned the word into a forbidden one.

Nintendo, however, is hedging its bets slightly, pointing out that “we cannot 100 per cent guarantee that every copy of the initial batch was returned to us and as such there may still be a small number of copies of the game in circulation”.

So you may still be able to get a rare, sweary original to sell on eBay yet.

DS & Wii continue to crush all opposition in the US

On July 24th, 2007 by Gary Cutlack

Wii salesIn June, 381,000 people in America decided, quite wisely, that the Wii was the new console for them. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 managed to sell just over half that, convincing 198k Americans to part with their dollars. PS3 managed half that again, coming it at 98k.

And do you even need to be told that DS kicked the hell out of the lot of them for fun? It managed a staggering 562,000 sales, proving that Nintendo’s weird idea for wiggly games is, if anything, getting more popular rather than proving to be the flash in the pan many were expecting.

And that’s today’s American business news. Now it’s over to John, with a cute human interest story about a baby…

Wii Baby

On July 23rd, 2007 by WiiWii

I thought we had completed the whole set already with Wii Boy and Dog but it seems I was mistaken, Wii Baby has now entered the foray and he’s kicking up more fuss that the last two put together. Not quite as involved as, say, the youngest Wii Sports player ever, this nipper has already bridged the gap between Internet phenomon and mainstream media star appearing on Jimmey Kimmel Live across the pond. The clip’s just cute-overload, so you should watch it too. Don’t be the only one in the dark when everyone’s talking about it. Source.

Soul Calibur Legends to use WiiConnect?

On July 23rd, 2007 by WiiWii

soul1.jpgThe guys over at IGN are getting quite excited about Soul Calibur Legends and not without reason, this Wii exclusive is shaping up to be a great showcase for the Wii with great graphics and co-op play already confirmed the IGN team have been scratching the surface and come up with rather an interesting snippet of information.

In an interview with Namco Bandai’s, Jin Okubo games site ITMedia asked if WiiConnect download support was being planned for the title, the producer responded, “We’re not at a stage where we can discuss it, but we’re looking into it.”

Not much to go on we know, but “looking into it” is better than a flat no! All we can hope is that with the focus on quests and co-op play that new content will flow freely to Wii owners all over the world

that may point to he so far rather redundant WiiConnect service be utilised to supply the owners of Soul Calibur Legends with the Wiis first downloadable content.
