WiiConnect24 damaging consoles? Nope, but the Opera browser is a security risk

wii_main3_0501.jpgThe problem with the electronic interweb is that there’s plenty of scope for unsubstantiated rumours to gain currency. The latest, as started over on CVG, is that the “always on” connectivity of the WiiConnect24 is causing hardware failure on the Wii console.

Other than a handful of disgruntled gamers, CVG hasn’t really got much evidence to support their theory. But they do point out that, whilst the power consumption is minimal when in the connect mode, the cooling fans aren’t running either. Which leaves the possibility open that the console can heat up.

Nintendo Europe was quick to dismiss the story, telling CVG direct that “we’ve had no reports in the UK of anything like this happening.” In the event that a fault does occur, European users are advised to contact the Nintendo Service Centre for further advice on 0870 60 60247.

Elsewhere on the technical glitches front, Wii Fanboy is reporting that, in releasing the final version of the Opera Web browser for the Wii, not all of all the security issues evident in the trial version have been fixed.

Hackers have found a new exploit in the browser’s Flash player which enables them to run emulators on the system. Nintendo won’t be too happy with this development, because if you can run emulators on the Wii then there’s clearly no need for a virtual console.
