The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - Part 5

Twilight Princess on Nintendo WiiAfter a prolonged break we return to The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Okay, so we know you’ve probably completed it already but use this a way to dwell happily upon on your adventure past. Either that or as a way to laugh at my dire attempts to restore light to the land of Hyrule.

You decide.

I’m greeted back to the twilight by three more of these pesky shadow beings. There’s no denying that they look awesome but, honestly, they fight like little girls, alone. Yes, individually they’re real easy to take down… Oh, wait, hold on. I said there was three didn’t I? This may be turn out to be a little more tricky.

It becomes apparent that mauling them one by one (remember I’m still in my wolf form) isn’t going to work here. As soon as I reach the last he just shrieks and resurrects his fallen comrades. Luckily Midna is on hand to teach me a very cool trick that you just know is going to come in handy later. I can see myself using this a lot.

A very generous spirit has given me a vessel. It’s use is to help restore light to this land. Imaginatively enough, it’s called the Vessel of Light. Who comes up with this stuff?

“The Dark Insects”… What a great name for a band. You heard it here first people.

Earlier in this diary I expressed fears due to the amount of stuff on screen. Well guess what folks, my screen just got busier. I know I can turn the map off and that does clear up some room to actually see what’s going on, but this is still a real concern.

I genuinely think that all this information is having a negative effect on my enjoyment of the game. Sure it acts to bring critical data to you, the player, but personally I think it also acts to distance you from the action. From the adventure.

I worry.

I’ve been busy collecting the tears shed by my fallen enemies and now my light vessel is full! Me: 1, Twilight: 0.

That was easier than I expected.

I’m back to my usual form! Though, if truth be told, I’m looking more like the old Link than ever before. I’m now sporting that familiar green tunic we all know and love.

I am “the chosen hero of the Gods!” (The Dark Insects first album title)

Everyone’s telling me that it’s time to head to the Forest Temple, and I’m more than happy to do as I’m told. Problem is I’ve got to pass a purple swamp first and someone’s left the smoke machine on; I can still hear the thing working it’s steamy magic!

After some problem solving I find out that monkeys are good in this situation. I love his crazy lantern wielding style. You won’t know what I’m talking about unless you’ve seen it with your own eyes, but he reminds me of Leatherface at the end of Texas Chainsaw Massacre with the way he swings it around. Honestly, substitute the torch in his hands for Gunnar Hansen’s finest and I’d swear I was watching that movie instead of playing this.

A classic example of Zelda genius. His squeak just adds to it. I love it.

But crossing the swamp is a slow process.

It’s funny but I kinda miss my other, more beastly, form. Every once in a while I forget that I can’t do certain things as human Link. My senses are shot to bits like this.

Now this is cool. I didn’t know there was going to be hidden skills to learn here. I now can deliver a devastating “ending blow” to downed enemies. Just in time too, it seems. The Forest temple is in sight and I think I’m going to need all the sword-fighting tricks I can muster.

One hidden skill down, six to go. I’m going to be unstoppable.

Well I’ve arrived at my first temple of the game and that seems as good a time as any to stop. Come back for Part Six tomorrow and you can read about my whole experience in the Forest Temple, from start to finish. Something tells me, though, that it’s going to take longer than an hour.

I look forward to seeing you then. [JC]
