35 reasons NOT to give up on the Wii

On February 27th, 2007 by Stuart Dredge

wii2.jpgOh, we’re a fickle bunch, us gamers. Recent weeks has seen a distinct wave of ‘meh’ sweep the Wii community, as people realise they’ve completed Zelda, they’re bored of Wii Sports, and still can’t be arsed to take the Wii Play disc out of its box.

What, they ask, are we supposed to do with this shiny white console? Is it wrong to be bored of Wii already? To which the answer is this: hang on in there, brothers and sisters! It’s true that the Wii world has been a bit lack-lustre recently, but there are plenty of reasons to stay true to Nintendo’s console. Here’s 35 of ‘em.

1. Super Mario Galaxy. The Fat Man returns in this much-delayed Triple-A adventure, that we all hoped would be a launch game, but wasn’t. I won’t give you the ‘best Mario game ever!’ blatherings, but suffice to say, it’s hotly anticipated. (more info)

2. Online play! Proper multiplayer over-the-network goodness is on the way this year. We think. Which will at least give us something to do with our Wii Friends other than send them comical celebrity Miis.

Hidden Warp Zone video

On February 26th, 2007 by WiiWii

Just a quick update on the Wii’s Hidden Warp Zone post earlier today. A video (I apologise that it’s all in German) popped up over on YouTube that details how to access it. At present the only content is a blurb about the history of Kirby but it’s promised that in future the Warp Zone will be a major repository for all things Nintendo; translation: geek heaven. Just to clarify: to access the Wii’s Warp Zone you must first be European (as NintendoWiiFanBoy put it: depending on your circumstances, this is either the easiest or the hardest step) and have downloaded the latest update for your console. Then all you need to do is just click on the new little smiley that appears in the shopping channel lobby and you’re there. Source. [JC]

God of Wii

God of Wii on WiiWii

If you’re like me and you’re a fan of webcomics and the Wii (though not necessarily in equal measure) then you’ll love what DeviantArt artist enerjak has recently cooked up. God of Wii is great little strip featuring Kratos (from SCEE’s God of War series) and some nasty broken wrist strap hijinks. Okay, so you’re never going to see this game on your Nintendo console but it’s a nice little find for you to have a looksy at. Read it here. Enjoy. Source. [JC]

Wii Quarters… Try to drink responsibly

On February 26th, 2007 by WiiWii

Wii Quarters on WiiWiiBy its very nature of crazy hand waving, too much laughter and broken TVs it’s clear that the Nintendo Wii and alcohol go hand-in-hand. Cue OddBrand.com to come in and parody this match made in heaven with Wii Quarters: Drinking Makes You Wii!

The game — going by its very professional cover — looks awesome and I’m not ashamed to say that I’d probably buy it if it weren’t so obviously make believe. We need a new title that takes advantage of all the Miis that we’ve been customising for so long, after all, and I’d love to see mine rolling around in drunken stupors — though it may require some additional animations on Nintendo’s part. Pay particular attention to the message on the fridge on the game’s cover; OddBrand clearly aren’t the biggest Sony fans around. Source. [JC]

EA working on disco-tastic Wii dancing game?

On February 26th, 2007 by Stuart Dredge

afro.jpgThat’s the rumour from Random Nintendo, who say they’ve learned that EA is developing an “exclusive” rhythm game for the Wii at its Montreal studio. The blog claims the game will have a 1970s vibe, and will use just the Wii-mote and nunchuck, rather than a separate dance-mat.

This sounds like it might rule, especially if it’s got a.) flares, b.) roller-skates, and c.) shedloads of those disco sound effects that sound like pigeons. You know the ones. More news as and when EA announces it.

WiiXT modchip promises DVD playback for your Wii

On February 26th, 2007 by Stuart Dredge

The people behind the WiiXT reckon it’s the ultimate Wii modchip, and they could be right if their claims of region-free DVD playback, the ability to play any-region Wii or GameCube backups (NOT pirated discs, right…), boot homebrew stuff from its menu, and run Virtual Console games.

There’s soldering needed to actually install it, so I’m not going anywhere near it with my shaky hands, but wannabe-modders can check out all the info at the WiiXT’s website. Its makers are very keen to stress that it’s not fake, by the way.

Set your Wii’s controls for the heart of the Warp Zone

On February 26th, 2007 by Stuart Dredge

Sorry, bit late on this one – the Virtual Console has a hidden area if you’re in the UK. It’s called the Warp Zone, and promises all manner of facts and trivia about old Nintendo games, starting with Kirby. Because when you’re sitting on the sofa with a Wii-mote in your hand, you want to read about Kirby, rather than play a game…

Okay, sorry, I’ll stifle the cynicism. Personally, I’d rather see tips on how to play the various games being sold through the Virtual Console, but if you’re a hardcore fanboy/girl, then you may end up losing yourself in the Warp Zone.

EA reveals first details on MySims for Wii

On February 26th, 2007 by Stuart Dredge

mysims.jpgWe knew EA was developing an all-new Sims game for Wii (and DS), but the publisher has only just revealed first details.

It’ll be called MySims, and it blends traditional Sims gameplay with a cast of characters not dissimilar to… well, see if you can guess.

You’ll start by creating your own Sim as usual, with all manner of design options to make it as like (or unlike) you as you want.  Then you move into a rundown town which you can transform using various building blocks and tools.

Sponsored Post: Sony VAIO SZ4 Series

On February 26th, 2007 by Stuart Waterman

SZ_02a.jpgGiving up caffeine for Lent? Good on you, but it won’t half play havoc with your computing on the move, if you’ve relied on coffee-shop Wi-Fi hotspots to get online in the past.

Sony’s VAIO SZ4 series will bolster your resolve. Not only is it a lightweight laptop with a whopping battery life and security features, but it comes with a free 30-day trial of T-Mobile’s web ‘n’ walk service, giving you mobile broadband on the go.

You won’t need a Master Barista to help you set it up either: you just load the software, slot in the supplied HSDPA/3G card, and get surfing.

Mario tune - now played on bottles!

On February 22nd, 2007 by WiiWii

It’s a very rare occurrence when the abbreviation LOL can actually be used with any real authority; the three little letters are used all to often without the necessary audible giggle. Not this time though. No, the above video actually did make me Laugh Out Loud: the concentration on their faces; the sheer number of participants; the wash of relief that comes at the songs end when you know that, at last, after 700 unsuccessful attempts the stars and planets aligned in just the right way and they got it perfect.

But what really gets me is the thought of a friend bumping into one of these people in the street just before recording, starting some small talk and then asking “what have you been up to since I saw you last? Must’ve been two? Three weeks now?” I’d love to see that persons face turn from a mild, friendly intrigue to a sort of distant pity as they tell them that day and night they’ve been doing this, before walking away to find yet another empty beer bottle, tuned to perfection. LOL. Source. [JC]
