Mortal Kombat: Armageddon promotional video

The forthcoming Mortal Kombat game on Wii has recently seen this video surface on Gamespot. It details the new control system for the game (which has already been released on PS2 and xbox360) and MK fans beware! If you’re like me, I don’t think you’re going to like it.

It’s videos like the above that worry me. They seem to have simplified the game beyond belief, as if learning the combinations was beyond our capabilities. A single flick of the wrist now (seems) to result in previously complex manoeuvres. I assume that their reasons for releasing such footage is to excite gamers — it’s so easy your grandmother could do it — but it has the opposite effect in my opinion. By making the special moves and fatalities as easy to perform as this, all skill is taken out of the actual gameplay. For the most part he doesn’t even look at the screen when he’s playing! Don’t get me wrong, I love the wiimote controller and all that you can do with it, but all the fun in mastering a character’s controls and then destroying your buddies in multiplayer looks to be lost. Gamers still want a challenge from their games. This takes button-bashing to a whole new (revolutionary) level. I’m sorry, but I do not approve as it stands. Once I get to play it, I hope that this point of view dramatically changes. Back in the day, these games used to be so, so good. Via Digg. [JC]

[...] It’s certainly the day for Wii control videos to surface, that’s two now by my count. Prince of Persia fans, I’m sure, will be keen to see how their favourite time traveller handles in this new port. Maybe it’s just me, but do a lot of those wiimote and nunchuck movements detailed in the clip bear no resemblance to the actions onscreen? Some of them I just can’t fathom. Maybe I’m just have a negative day. [JC] [...]

[...] We mentioned a (very) similar video to this one at the beginning of the year but I decided to mention this variation as (in my opinion) it describes the new control system a little better than the last. It even mentions a few new character moves. What do you think after watching? Are you as concerned as I am that they’ve made everything a little too easy? Source. [...]
