Further News In Regards To The ‘Hold Your Wee For A Wii’ Contest Death

On January 29th, 2007 by Katherine Hannaford

strange.jpgAs with the rest of the video game industry, we’ve been following the case of the woman who died of water intoxication through playing a ‘Hold Your Wee For A Wii’ contest with an American radio station recently. Further news has been added to last week’s update about the station firing the 10 employees involved, that the family of the deceased are now suing - only in America, eh?

According to the lawsuit, the woman, Jennifer Lea Strange, did not sign a liability waiver, which thus suggests the station are responsible for her death. If you’re at all interested in this case (you wouldn’t be alone there, with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission also looking into it), read some of the comments on this article about the death, all offering refreshing alternative takes on the incident, including one point being made about the legality of liability waivers stipulating a death can occur, as it would be seen as assisting a suicide. Nintendo Big Up The Gangster World With Scarface & The Godfather Both Coming To The Wii

On January 29th, 2007 by Katherine Hannaford

wii5.jpgStart decapitating the nearest horse in anticipation, as 2007 is set to be a big year for gaming, with these two legendary gangster films being turned into Wii games. Both games have been released on other consoles, with The Godfather: Blackhand Edition being a bit of a game-whore and appearing on the PC, PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360 and the PSP, and Scarface: The World Is Yours on the PC, PS2, and Xbox. The latter was originally scheduled to be released on the 360 and PS3 later this year, but these rumours have been quashed recently. Lucky for the other next-gen console in the race then - the Wii. Wii modchip surfaces

On January 27th, 2007 by WiiWii

Wiinja on WiiWii

It was bound to happen sooner or later and here it is. The Wiinja modchip — the first modchip for the Wii — allows you to play backups of games from your own region; in other words: copied disks. I always try to avoid things such as this. When it comes to something as special as my Wii, I feel a little bad about ripping it open and soldering its guts. That would be like playing with the intestines of a loved one! Oh yeah, and Nintendo don’t really like you doing it either. Still, it’s news in the world of Wii and now you know about it. Cool name though. Via Digg. [JC]

Original downloadable games headed for Wii?

On January 27th, 2007 by WiiWii

A recent interview with Hudson’s Director of Marketing — Kororinpa — gave birth to a quote that’s got the Nintendo world pretty excited. When asked if his company has plans to release any original content through the Wii’s Virtual Console he answered “no”, but then went on to say:

“However, in the future, you should rephrase that question to: ‘Are there any plans to launch original content on some downloadable service on the Wii,’ and you might get a different answer.”

What is this downloadable service that he speaks of? It’s not the VC; he claims that it’s purpose is “to bring back classic games, not to introduce new content.” Perhaps it’s a new channel, we just don’t know. It is an exciting prospect, and some original downloadable content can only be a good thing. Xbox360 players, like myself (don’t worry! Wii comes first), will know that all too well with its Live Arcade. Storage could be a problem with the Wii’s 512MB internal memory, but I still can’t wait to hear more about this. Via Digg.

The forgotten Wii Sports: Airplane

On January 27th, 2007 by WiiWii

For a game that had playable code at last year’s E3, very little has been heard since from Wii Sports: Airplane. A sufficient number of months have now passed for people to start noticing its absence, and they want to know when they’re going to see this title on their game store shelves dammit!

Every NES game ever!

On January 27th, 2007 by WiiWii

Every NES game on WiiWiiOnce in every blue moon this mortal cyber-realm plays host to some cosmic life-changing event. Normally missed by most, but not this time. The “event” comes in the form of an eBay auction this time around. What could the auction possibly be for? Well, if you’ve read the title of this post (which I’d guess you probably have) then that holds a vital clue. In fact scratch that, that is not your clue, my friends, it is your answer. Every single NES game ever in one auction plus peripherals (670 games!).

Okay, so it’s nothing to do with the Wii console but I couldn’t not mention this here. My Nintendo-fanboy-sense tingled and I couldn’t keep the info to myself. According to the description all games are in great condition and, at the time of writing, bidding has reached $2,800.00. I’m a little short on cash right now but if anyone wants to buy this for me I can say with some degree of confidence that I’ll probably love you for the rest of my natural life. Thanks. Via Digg. Mega Mii Parade on Wii

On January 27th, 2007 by WiiWii

Do you ever sit, disappointed and seething, while watching your sparse Mii Parade dribble down your screen and wonder: hey, what would one thousand and seven individual Miis look like on there? No? Well, truth be told, neither have I, but someone has and that’s what’s important right now. For our viewing pleasure they’ve even recorded the event in a glorious motion picture. Swing past here to see it. Maybe I’m just greedy, but wouldn’t two thousand and seven of the little guys and gals have been more fitting? Y’know, to go with that year number thingy that we’re in right now? There’s just no pleasing some people.

You & Wii: Everything you need to know (book)

On January 26th, 2007 by WiiWii

You & Wii on WiiWiiLooks like Prima are cashing in on the fact that Nintendo’s new console is pulling in players from all walks of life instead of just the usual “gamer” variety. They’re about to release a book called You & Wii: Everything You Need to Know which details everything from setting up your Wii console to browsing the Internet. It contains everything you need to know about the Wii channels and, best of all, step-by-step guides to creating celebrity mii lookalikes.

The book even comes with a customisable cover allowing you to use the stickers provided to plaster your mii’s face all over it. And for those of you who need it — though I can’t imagine why — there’s even a full strategy guide for Wii Sports included in its pages. No word as to when it’ll be released over here yet though; according to Amazon it should’ve been out days ago. Via Kotaku. [JC]

New Mario Party 8 screenshots

On January 26th, 2007 by WiiWii

Mario Party 8 on WiiWiiGoNintendo recently posted some new screens from the next Mario Party game — that’s number eight for all of you who want specifics — and it certainly looks like the series’ first Wii outing is going to be a blast. The games, for those of you who have never had the pleasure of playing the previous titles, are basically huge mini-game collections (we haven’t seen any of those for the Wii yet, have we?) with a bunch of Nintendo characters stuck on. And they’re fantastic.

The wiimote and nunchuck capabilities are likely to do great things for this game when it’s finally released with the majority of the minigames specifically tailored to take advantage of the setup. As the name suggests, these games have always been good for parties and are best enjoyed in multiplayer. Expect broken lampshades and black eyes when the game hits these shores this year. Hurry up with your new controller Nintendo! We’re gonna need it! Via The Last Boss. [JC]

Firefox browser rumoured for Wii?

On January 26th, 2007 by WiiWii

Firefox on WiiWiiNot long after discovering the cool Super Mario Bros. theme for Firefox yesterday, I stumbled across this rumour… and, personally, I’d say a rumour is what it will stay. The mighty Firefox Internet browser coming to Wii? GamingPhreak recently posted this “news exclusive” on their website without any hint of confirmation or a source. Many gamers are of the opinion that this was just to entice more visitors to the site. Shameful.

With the paid-for Opera browser on the way for the Wii, Nintendo would have to be a little crazy to then develop a second and free Internet browser too (open source anyone?). There’s no doubt that a Firefox for the Wii console would go down very well with gamers — imagine tabbed browsing for a start — but as Opera already has vast experience with low resource systems (mobile phones etc.) and Mozilla Firefox has none, this is unlikely at best.
