Gottlieb’s Pinball Classics Coming Soon On The Wii

On December 4th, 2006 by Katherine Hannaford

game.jpgStill longing for the days of playing pinball down the chippy, whilst waiting for your kebab to be thrust into your meaty hand? Shame today’s Starbucks and co. are flaunting The Independent instead of some Gottlieb Pinball Classics games - who would choose war and politics over a quality session of pinballing?

Thank goodness for the Wii, with word coming just the other day that Gottlieb will be releasing a brand new version for the console, giving you an authentic arcade experience. The game uses the motion sensor in the Wii-mote to ’tilt’ the table, and you can fire off the balls with the Nunchucks. It’s expected to retail at £29.99 from launch day, and as Gottlieb are infamous for making the most popular pinball tables in the World, it’s sure to be a trip down memory lane. Mmm, can you smell that fat frying yet?

If monkeys played Wii Super Monkey Ball…

On December 4th, 2006 by Stuart Dredge

funny-monkey.JPGOkay, bear with me on this one. While we train up the WiiWii team of monkeys to write posts for us (at the moment, they keep veering off into Shakespeare, which is a pain), we started idly speculating about whether real monkeys would be any good at playing Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz on a Wii.

After all, they do have opposable thumbs, so are probably the best equipped members of the animal kingdom to wield a Wii-mote. And this seemed like an ideal opportunity for five minutes arsing about on Wikipedia some serious scientific research. Read on for our top five Wii-playing monkeys.

SSX Blur: the first video footage

On December 4th, 2006 by Stuart Dredge

I’ve always loved SSX: big air, big tunes, and the chance to snort coffee out of your nose laughing at the British character’s on-course banter. We already knew it was coming to Wii, but over the weekend some footage leaked out of the game in action.

It’s shaping up pretty well too, and looks tailor-made for the Wii-mote. Click below to get your snowy fill.

Beautiful women buy Wii, fat ugly men buy PS3

On December 4th, 2006 by Stuart Dredge

japan-ladies.jpgDON’T BLAME ME PS3 owners. It’s YOU who’s been eating all those KFC big buckets… And anyway, it’s Kotaku saying that lots of young, attractive Japanese women have been buying Wiis since it launched at the weekend, while PS3 has attracted lots of double-chinned blokes instead.

Of course, in the UK, we’re ALL fugly thanks to years of bingeing on alcopops and pies, so I doubt they’ll be making a similar comparison on Oxford Street at midnight this Thursday…

Wii gets its first adult website

On December 4th, 2006 by Stuart Dredge

juxel-for-wii.jpgDon’t pretend you’re surprised, either. Juxel, which describes itself as “the world’s first Web 2.0 porn site”, has launched a separate version specifically optimised for the Wii’s browser.

That means larger fonts, square responsive buttons, and cheeky use of the Wii logo that may well provoke a stern legal letter faster than I can come up with a decent Wii-mote joke.

The link is below, although be warned – it’s as office-unfriendly as any site promising “chunky blonde teen in skimpy white panties gets ready to f***” on its front page can be. Although if you work in an office that lets you have a Wii on your desk, they’re probably pretty relaxed about you surfing mucky sites too, I guess…

Get Your Geek On With This Nintendo Family Tree Tshirt

On December 1st, 2006 by Katherine Hannaford

tshirt1.jpgThe other Nintendo evolution tee not take your fancy? Fair enough, blue doesn’t suit everyone, but what about this Nintendo family tree tshirt then? It costs $19.95 from Nerdy Shirts, and comes in small, medium, large, and for those who haven’t been taking advantage of the exercise the Wii offers you (basically all us Brits, boo), extra-large. Take a look under the jump for a close-up of the image. D’you reckon it’s possible to purchase the model as well as the tshirt? We’ll offer him a comfy bed…

If You Read 5 Nintendo Wii Stories Today… (01-Dec-06)

On December 1st, 2006 by Katherine Hannaford
  • Japan is the next lucky country to get ahold of the Wii, with the muchly-craved console going on sale tomorrow, the 2nd of December. Only 400,000 consoles will be available, with prices listed here. (Via BBC News)
  • EA currently have muchos love for the Wii, as they’ve just purchased a development studio in Salt Lake City, exclusively for producing Wii titles. Quite a change of heart for the huge gaming corp, after their previous dismissal of the GameCube. (Via Tom’s Hardware Guide)
  • Yahoo (remember them?) recently launched a gaming portal gathering Wii-centric Flickr photos, del.icio.us links, Yahoo Games, and plenty of others together for the avid Wii consumer. Just don’t forget little ol’ us, m’kay? (Via Wired Blogs)
  • Specifically for the geriatric gamer, Retrozone will be selling adapters early next year, allowing us to use dusty-but-not-forgotten NES and SNES controllers through the GameCube slot on the Wii. Authentic retro gaming, indeed. (Via Nintendic)
  • It has been confirmed the Wii is region locked, which means contrary to original belief, we won’t be able to play those quirky exclusive-to-Japan software and games on our foreign consoles. Let’s all blame our Western-dwelling parents! (Via Play-Asia.com)

Top 20 Wii videos on YouTube

On December 1st, 2006 by Stuart Dredge

Normal TV? Pah! Mine hasn’t been used for the last month, as I’ve been glued to YouTube instead soaking up all the details on Wii I can find. Obviously, from next Friday, I’ll be back in the living room once my console arrives.

But in the meantime, here’s 20 videos that I’d pick out as showing why Wii is worth getting excited about.

1. The ultimate trailer for The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess. This tells you all you need to know.

2. Drums. I’ve waited my whole life for a console that would let me play drums like Animal Out Of The Muppets. Wii is it. Look!

WarioWare Smooth Moves on Wii: check cheerleader Mona’s mini-games

On December 1st, 2006 by Stuart Dredge

As I was trying to explain to a non-gamer today why WarioWare Smooth Moves is such a hotly-anticipated game, I thought I’d point them in the direction of YouTube. It’s got a stack of movies showing various minigames.

Take this one (below) for example. It shows a bunch of minigames from cheerleader Mona’s section of the game. It made me want to buy it, anyway. And the person I sent the link to? Well, they came back saying it looked like a load of old wacky rubbish that made no sense at all. Exactly!

Fancy a one-in-fifty chance of getting a free Wii?

On December 1st, 2006 by Stuart Dredge

That’s what gamers are being offered by game subscription service SwapGame.com, which says it’s going to give away a Wii to every 50th subscriber until the end of December. To qualify, you have to sign up and then add ten games to your play list.

The site is a bit like those online DVD rental services, except for games. You pay a monthly subscription – the lowest is £9.99 – and can then rent games to play, and if you like them, pay a lower price to keep them. Apparently Wii games are already some of the hottest items being ordered by the site’s existing users.
