The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess – Hour #04
And so our journey continues, friend. Or perhaps it is just beginning? The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, hour four, will tell all.

As the story begins to surface and my semi hand-in-hand tutorial few hours come to an end, I start to realise just how epic this game may turn out to be. I haven’t ever really left the (relative) safety of my small home, Ordon Village, yet and already I’ve been playing for three hours. Sure I had a little excursion into the shadow which a prompt guard put and end to all too quickly, but for some reason I don’t think that counts.

Although I’m home again, I’m not welcomed like I should be. That cheeky so and so Midna has left me in my wolf form until I get her a sword and shield. What on Earth (read: Hyrule) would I ever want those for? Anyone would think I’ve got a quest ahead of me or something.

A talent has emerged in this new hairy body which just might come in handy: call me Doctor Dolittle cause I can now speak to the animals! It’s a pity that most animals don’t have much to say however. Well except one thing…

The horror! Someone (or something) has come by and stolen all the kids! It’s that crazy place (the land of Vulgaria) in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang all over again.

Two familiar faces are chatting in the dark, looking suspicious. I take it upon myself to get as close as I can to them, without them seeing, to listen in. Don’t worry if they spot you though. These two are so bad at running away and hiding you’d be forgiven for thinking that they’d simply walked a few paces to left, stopped, and picked-up on the sneaky conversation again; they were always the first to be found in games of hide n’ seek as kids.
Seems like they know the location of a shield. Hold on, didn’t Midna want me to grab one of these? Handy, then, that the two loiterers continually and incessantly reiterate the location of their “hidden†treasure.
They must be in a really helpful mood tonight because they even give me a major clue on the sword problem too. Everyone’s so nice here.

My hawk from hour one is now being used against me in a perverse twist of plot. As if that wasn’t bad enough, that damn cat (also from hour number one) all of a sudden wants to be my best friend. Not a chance.
hours played 03.26
Shield is mine. Midna is half-happy.

Using my wolf senses I’m now sniffing around in the dirt like a madman looking for more sparkles in the earth. I’m sure there’s a joke about drug addiction in there somewhere.
Those three frogs should definitely sing a song (another example of when only players will know what I’m talking about here).
hours played 03.36
I have the sword. Midna is whole-happy.

It’s nice to see the tron sky making a return to deliver me my first little boss fight: The shadow being – despite looking the part – is a pushover. My trusty wiimote fighting skills vanquish him in no time.
As a reward I get to meet a real, live light spirit, Ordona.
hours played 03.45
Light is lost and must be recovered. Guess what, there’s only one person who can do this. That’s right, me! There are three more of Ordona’s kind and they must be revived if there is to be an end to this darkness. The first must be revived before I can return to my human form. Using my acute wolf senses, and if previous Zelda games are anything to go by, I smell a Forest Temple coming on.
hours played 03.51
I’m loving the fact that Midna lives in my shadow. I only just noticed this.
hours played 03.59
It’s come to the point of no return now. Armed with my trusty shield and sword I’m ready to travel back into the ever-expanding darkness. The fact that the game actually warns you that you may not be able to return, though, frightens me a little.
With the bossy little madam, Midna, on my back and the lament of a light spirit in my ears I jump in towards the shadow and in towards my fifth hour.

Yeah, it doesn’t surprise me that I’m behind everyone else. I’m the same with all the Zelda games. I savour every moment and dread the end. Apologies to everyone for a lack of updates on this series, I haven’t had proper access to a tv over the xmas hols to play my Wii. That’s all fixed now though. Expect the Zelda diary to resume soon.
