Why 2007 can’t come fast enough: Super Mario Galaxy
With a mere few days left in 2006 what better way to spend them than to pass the hours salivating over what exciting Wii goodness looms upon us in the new year. That, and recover after the excessive festivities.
Super Mario Galaxy kicks off our small yet essential list of WiiWii.tv reasons why 2007 can’t come fast enough.
Any Nintendo fan videogame fan should realise the impact that this game could have. Super Mario games consistently deliver and like Mario64 and others before it this promises to reinvent the series - and, perhaps, platform and 3D gaming itself - yet again. The game has already been described as “practically perfect” and “the new beginning for Mario” by lucky E306 goers who got to play the title earlier this year.
With worries that the wiimote control system might not be suited to “real” games a opposed to novel mini-games firmly quashed after the success of Zelda: Twilight Princess, excitement levels are huge for the new Mario adventure. Both controllers are used in a similar fashion to Z:TP with the only difference at this early stage being the fact that the wiimote cursor is not constantly on screen, and appearing only when the B-button is pressed. This star-shaped cursor is then used to interact with the environment such as ringing bells to divert enemies attention and to grab onto special locations mid-flight.
In case all this Mario Galaxy talk is new to you, the game begins when Princess Peach is kidnapped (shock!) and dragged off into outer space. Of course you follow and a myriad of new worlds opens up before you. Some planets are flat meaning some old-skool platform action whereas others are spherical. Using the miracle of gravitational pulls, you get to go all the way around and explore the never-ending surfaces of these little globes.
We’ve got black holes, zero gravity, spin attacks, new and familiar faces and who knows what else to look forward to come March ‘07. As if Zelda wasn’t reason enough to own a Wii, Nintendo is spoiling us.
