The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess – Hour #02

Twilight Princess on Nintendo WiiAh, so you’ve decided to return to hear more of my Zelda exploits. Good. Hour one was a little slow; getting to grips with the game, exploring nooks, breaking rocks and talking to all the pretty characters and such. Hour two promises to be faster-paced.

Let’s waste no more time then. Onwards!

Welcome to The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess on Nintendo Wii. The second hour.

Starting up my game to play again reveals that, yes, you do have to go through that annoying TV settings screen that I mentioned last time (see hour 00.07) on every load. Seems like overkill if you ask me. Actually that’s not a very positive beginning to the post… continue, it’ll get better.

At the end of the last hour I mentioned that I had two new items worth mentioning. The first is the incredibly useful empty bottle (a staple in the previous Zelda games that you can never have enough of), and the other is the slightly more exciting slingshot. I spend a bit of time playing around with this before heading home.

For some reason only certain characters react to being shot in the face with pumpkin seeds. I found this strange, but it makes a fun mini-game seeing which ones do and which don’t. Epona certainly doesn’t take kindly to the sting.

Everyone’s so nice in this town – even with all the random acts of slingshot violence – no sooner am I back at my house and I’ve been given a present. Okay so the guy broke into my house and left it in a huge chest in the middle of my front room but, hey, it’s the thought that counts. What could be inside?

Oh yes, this is what I’ve been waiting for, I am now the owner of one wooden sword. I head straight out and the door and I’m looking for a chicken (Ocarina of Time fans will know what I’m talking about here). Attack one enough and something really unexpected happens… I’ll leave it at that. Go find out.

And while you’re at it, why not go swipe those three kids standing outside your house? Maybe I’m satisfied by the little things in life, but the fact that they actually duck your blows seems like a really impressive little touch; all the adults I’ve gone after don’t even flinch. It must be something about Zelda games – I’m normally such a nice person – but suddenly being armed with a slingshot and sword makes me want to attack everything in sight.

You draw the sword by a quick flick of the wrist with your wiimote and strikes are dealt by mimics of hacking and slashing with the same. Even a little shake of your nunchuk results in the awesome spinning attack. All in all this system is very responsive, but I can’t help wondering what it’ll be like when you’re armed with a shield too. I guess I’ll find out soon enough.

Damn monkeys. Everything’s kicking off now. There’s me just trying to show off my skills to my adoring fans and one of the little hairy apes (but wearing a very pretty red bow) comes along and spoils the fun.

Zelda on WiiWiiI’m on a rescue mission and it’s giving me my first taster of life outside the village gates. Admittedly it’s mainly just darkened caves for the time being but the inclusion of an oil-powered lantern adds a neat little timed element to the whole affair.

I’m also getting my first slice of action and this new wiimote combat system is growing on me more and more. The enemies will be familiar to previous Zelda players but if there’s one thing that Zelda games do well it’s making repetition never seem “samey”. How they do that is anyone’s guess but I’m not complaining.

It does feel, however, that I’m being rushed through the section of the game and, not only that, I’m being rushed hand-in-hand through it. I can only assume that really I’m still part of a big glorified tutorial and get on with it. The combat is great though and I’m getting plenty of practise on bats and rats in these cave systems and I even just got my first piece of heart container. Believe it or not you’ll get your first glance at a temple at this point, though you don’t get to go inside, yet.

Twenty goats to herd today; ten more than yesterday. My best time was 1:45, what’s yours?

There’s nothing wrong with that leg! It looks exactly the same as always! (NOTE: only people who have played the game will have any idea what I’m talking about here)

I’m being falsely accused of animal cruelty (chicken + sword anyone?), the sky has turned to Tron, and some little kid’s bullied me into giving him my sword. Now I’m defenceless against the evil hordes, and at just the same time that the game has it’s first major drama. Stay tuned for hour three when we enter the twilight zone…

[...] Three hours in and it suddenly feels like I’m only just starting the game now. I’ve had my experiences in Ordon Village (hours one and two) which have given me a fairly lengthy tutorial on Links control system and now I’ve had my taster of the wolf Link and Midna during this third hour. I’m sent hurtling back to the light and I’m ready for action. [...]
