The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess – Hour #01

Twilight Princess on Nintendo WiiAnd so with a new Nintendo console comes a new Zelda game at launch; could any more of my fanboy dreams come true at once I ask you? I think not. A mere mortal man could not handle such pleasures if they did.

What begins here in this post is my (most likely, epic) journey back into the land that we fans call Hyrule. Hour by hour, you’ll get to read all about my adventures and embarrassing mistakes. Some may even call it a game diary; I call it a quest.

You’ll witness the tears, the joy, the sweaty palms and the broken TVs. Consider it a WiiWii experiment. If it works out nicely you’ll get to see more Wii games in this format, if not then we’ll hide it away in the archives and never speak of it again. We’ve really got no idea how this will turn out. Leave us comments. Inform.

Anyway, back to business. Welcome to The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Hour number one.

Oh, and no spoilers.

Enjoy.

Holding the game case in my grubby hands it almost feels like a crime to open it and taint the perfection… I peel back the wrapper and dive in. Even the disc looks awesome.

hours played 00.07
Going against my better better judgement I’ve jumped straight into the game and avoided reading any controls or back-story from the manual. I’ve drooled over the channel preview screen, watched the titles (twice) and named my characters. What did I go for? Link and Epona of course! What else? The game starts after an unexpected TV settings screen. I’ll forgive that though, as long as I don’t have to skip past it every time I play.

At seven minutes in all cut scenes are done and I at last get to see those familiar three hearts in the top left. I get treated to my first taste of controlling link with the wiimote and nunchuk… instantly it feels right.

hours played 00.16
Zelda Screen I find out that herding livestock is a lot more fun than it should be.

hours played 00.22
So far we’ve had guys with crazy moustaches, little boys that look like little girls, musical grass, and now I’m practising z-targeting with Pancho from MTV’s Dirty Sanchez. Oh yes, this is a classic Zelda game alright.

hours played 00.40
After spending an obscene amount of time trying to catch a cat with a hawk (you’ll understand when you play it) I finally crack the mystery. This worries me getting stuck so early in the game, not only because I might have trouble completing it, but if I keep getting stuck these hour-by-hour entries are going to get a bit boring for you.

Nonetheless I’ve done it and now I’ve got my first item worth talking about: the fishing rod. I run to the river to try the thing out, unlike controlling Link this does not come so easy to me. It’s going to take a bit of getting used to.

In other news, Pancho’s not speaking to me anymore (via z-targeting anyways).

hours played 00.43
The amount of stuff on screen (button assignments, maps, health and rupees) is beginning to get to me a bit. As I advance through the game I can see this display getting very, very crowded. In the past Zeldas it’s never been much of an issue because of the previous controller layouts. The wiimote controller, however, dominates. It’s like that loud (read: drunk) person at parties who’s always got to be the centre of attention… I’m just waiting for the d-pad, top-right, to suggest a conga line, then it’s power off.

hours played 00.55
Fishing is slowly transforming from a chore to fun now, but it took some practise and some time. Be prepared for that cat (mentioned earlier) to annoy the hell out of you again around this time though.

hours played 01.00
Everything seems to be happening at once and I’ve got two new items, both old classics that will without a doubt prove useful to no end. But I’ll keep them hush hush until hour two. See you then.

I don’t know if I’ve had a slow first hour or not yet and it’s difficult to tell you all my thoughts and excitements minus spoilers. Why not tell us about your first hour via the magic of post comments? And tell us what you think of the whole hour-by-hour format. Will you be stopping by to read hour two? If so, stay tuned. Hour two comes tomorrow. See you then.

I too had cat and hawk issues, although I found the fishing farly intuitive. From the kitchen my wife thought I was paying darts, the fool. Lack of Zelda-like melodies so far, no shivers-down-the -spine moments yet.

[...] With worries that the wiimote control system might not be suited to “real” games a opposed to novel mini-games firmly quashed after the success of Zelda: Twilight Princess, excitement levels are huge for the new Mario adventure. Both controllers are used in a similar fashion to Z:TP with the only difference at this early stage being the fact that the wiimote cursor is not constantly on screen, and appearing only when the B-button is pressed. This star-shaped cursor is then used to interact with the environment such as ringing bells to divert enemies attention and to grab onto special locations mid-flight. [...]

[...] If there’s one thing gamers love more then actually playing games, it’s finding bugs in said games. Personally I have no idea why this is, but who am I to argue? And, if I’m honest, I secretly like seeing them myself. A video posted recently on YouTube shows the latest (and only, to my knowledge) glitch found in The Legend of Zelda on Wii. It’s pretty funny. The postman, so caught up in his work, doesn’t even realise that he’s dropping to his untimely death. Miraculously though, he still manages to deliver Link’s letter from beyond the grave. Spooky. [...] Since this month marks the one year anniversary of PETA2’s undercover investigation into the evil primate experimentation laboratory Covance they’ve decided to give away a Nintendo Wii and a copy of The Legend of Zelda to one lucky supporter. Might seem like a strange competition at first, but wait! Here comes the genius: “Since the demo of the new Zelda features Link rescuing trapped monkeys from cages, we thought we’d mark the occasion with a huge giveaway: One lucky winner gets a free copy of Twilight Princess and a brand-new Wii to play it on” [...]

[...] Though originally planned for the Gamecube, Super Paper Mario was held back for Wii release in the much the same way as The Legend of Zelda was (though, as far as I know, there won’t be a cube port of this one afterwards), and I’ve got to say: it’s looking awesome. Word on the Internets is that the game will be released in the US in April and — as per usual — there’s no word of a date on our shores yet. [...]

My personal favourites are the Hyrule fortune teller’s chant (”wait… loading takes a while” spelt backwards) and the fact that Fyer (the cannon guy) has a Bullet Bill on his sleeve. More importantly though, going by the comments on those posts, it seems that quite a few gamers are still having some problems with the cat in Link’s village at the start of the game. Well, in an effort to avoid spoilers and such we never posted such a guide — not that it really spoils anything, but not everyone wants to be told how to do these things you understand. For those of you who do want a little helping hand, though, you can read this guide that I myself have written elsewhere. The village stuff at the beginning is annoying, isn’t it?

Here’s the basics to get you going:

    1) climb up the vines to where that guy is with the Hawk weed or whatever that is. You can use the weed here to knock down a bee hive for fishing bait, though you don’t need it. If you look past the house to the north, there is another platform with Hawk weed on it. Make your way to that and call a hawk. When you look around, you’ll see from a great distance a monkey holding an object of some sort. Use the hawk to hit that monkey.

    2) The object it dropped, which turns out to be a carriage, will float down river for you to pick up (literally). Take it to the pregnant woman, and she’ll ask you to follow her for a few moments. She’ll then give you a fishing pole (for bobber fishing, not lure fishing).

    3) Next task is to get the cat back to the item shop. The cat is behind the windmill house. You’ll see that next to the cat is a small dock and an area of water with a bunch of fish. You’ll need to catch TWO fish here (not just one, but two). Upon catching the second fish, the cat will run back to the item shop with fish in mouth.

    4) When you get back to the Item shop, its owner will thank you by giving you a Bottle of milk. The Slingshot then becomes available for sale for 30 Rupees. Do whatever you must to get 30 Rupees and buy it. Then, head back to your house. I forget if the Slingshot tutorial is necessary or not, but it wouldn’t hurt to talk to those kids and begin it.

    5) Afterward, shoot off the skullwalltula from the ladder to your house and go inside to get a Wooden Sword.

    6) Go back outside, and if you want, take part in the quick sword tutorial. After awhile, you’ll have to go north to begin a quick rescue mission.

    That’ll get you going.

the cat is hard, you have to yank the wii remote up and down then youll have a fish once u got fish on reel it in…took me hours to find that out!!

  47. amy Says:

OMG im sooooo stuck on the bit were you have to find the fourth monkey and breaking the bolder i dont have a clue does any one know ???

  48. bcn Says:

Catch EASY a FISH Throw the line into the water and wait until the colored bobber sinks below the screen. This means a fish has bitten. QUICKLY lift the Wii-mote up hold it there. If done correctly, a “Fish on” message will appear. Continue holding the Wii-mote up until Link reels the fish in. Throw the second fish away, so the cat takes it.

  49. martin Says:

Hope beloe help(Thanks to a guy called JHoersten2
Here’s the deal when you have 3 monkeys:

    1. In the east room, where the boulder is- take the same bomb guy you used to toss in the plants mouth, and jump across the gap. Toss the bomb by the boulder… it’s a quick hustle, but you can make it.

    2. Rescue #4 monkey in there by rolling into the 2 pillars right as youi walk in.

    3. go back to the main room, take the north door where the bridge is out. Monkeys will help you across.

    4. Follow common sense and rescue more monkeys, get some treasure. Everything is influenced on the boomerang you’re gonna get, including final boss.

    5. For the 4 wind pillars with the gate, use the boomerang that you get in step #3 and follow the highlighted order on the ground.

    Hope all works well!

Anyone who has read this and/or walkthroughs and needs to know how to catch a fish knows, you need to catch 2 fish, where you need to catch them, and you need a “Fish On!” message. I can get the fish to pull down my bobber below the water, but I can’t get a “Fish On” message. It’s very frustrating, anyone who can give a detailed explanation of how and when to jerk up the rod, it would be VERY appreciated. Thanks!

  65. Jenny Says:

omg! I’m so thrilled I got one, yes! ok, after you cast your line, wiggle your remote without letting your colored bobber thing leave the water. You should see fish swimming towards you and out of view. Wait a little while, until your bobber has sunk below the water several times. You should be holding your remote horizontal to the water. After the bobber sinks below the water, quickly jerk your remote into a vertical position, if timed right your screen should have a message saying “FISH ON!” continue holding your remote in a vertical position and Link will just reel it in. Make sure when you flick your remote up, the bobber is completely submerged. I hope this helps, oh and make sure you watch Links face when the cat steals his fish, priceless! Good luck all!

HEY GAME PLAYERS!!! Sooo… both my brother and I were trying to figure out how to get that STUPID darn cat back to the freakin shop. It turns out… you have to catch TWOOOO fish. not one. TWO.

Then the cat will run back on its own.

—–Sooo, those of you trying to get that MONKEYYY…… you climb the vines up to where that guy is sitting… and you go to the very last one(to do this you have to jump on the pink roof and then just keep jumping till the last one)… ok so there is that WEED stuff. you need to pick that…blow it so the hawk will come. Point the Wii remote at the monkey and let the hawk go…. the hawk will get the basket.. and give it to you. then return it to the lady.

    Have fun :]

ok so I am in the first temple i belive, and i have all the monkeys but one. its the part where u have to use the boomarang to get those exploding spiders to blow up the bolder. then you climb up the vines and defeat one of those purple guys and two of those plants. well the monkey is behind the boulder and idk how to get through the boulder. ive tired to use the boomarang to get the exploding spider up there but it keeps exploding once it hits the wall. can anyone help?
