Why 2007 can’t come fast enough: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

On December 31st, 2006 by WiiWii

Corruption on WiiWiiSo as we come to the end of our little list of “why 2007 can’t come fast enough” I had to end it on a big one, and they don’t come much bigger than this. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption completes the Metroid trilogy started on the Gamecube and looks set to finish the story with style.

Just as it predecessors before it raised the bar in terms of graphical standards on Nintendo’s last console, this title is sure to do the same on the Wii; the trailers, demos and screenshots that have been released so far look stunning.

Though originally intended to be a launch title for our beloved console it’s now been knocked back into May 2007 so you’ve got a wait ahead. Still - as DDP would say (forgive the obscure reference here) - that’s not a bad thing, that’s a good thing. The more time this game spends in development the better it’ll be when it hits stores. Developers Retro Studios have an excellent track record (they’re responsible for the previous two Prime games) so you know they’ll do this justice.

Fellow Wii first-person shooter Red Steel has met with some backlash after control issues. It seems the wiimote setup just was not suitable for some for playing the first-person perspective. Metroid Prime 3 (thrii?) is going to have it’s work cut out to redefine the FPS on Wii. Early E306 demos, however, show that the company is having no problems in that department so far.

We wait with baited breath.

Why 2007 can’t come fast enough: Harvest Moon: Tree of Peace

On December 31st, 2006 by WiiWii

Harvest Moon Tree of Peace on WiiWiiThe Harvest Moon series is now ten years old but it’s certainly showing no signs of ageing if early details from this new game in the series are anything to go by. Tree of Peace seems to be more story-driven than the previous Harvest Moons (where farming was your main concern) with your aim now being to revive a great tree that has dried-up and bring back the missing tree goddess. Exciting stuff.

Farming your land is still integral to the game however. Wiimote actions will be utilised to the full extent with all farming chores being controlled through your own movements: swinging the wand like a hoe to prepare the fields and tilting it like a watering can to water plants are just two examples of this. Games of this type won’t be to everyone’s taste but if you’re a fan of something like Animal Crossing on the DS then this might just be the Wii game for you. Warning: going by previous Harvest Moon games, Tree of Peace will most probably steal a vast majority of your life. Expect to lose friends, jobs, partners and health as a result.

Why 2007 can’t come fast enough: Super Smash Bros. Brawl

On December 30th, 2006 by WiiWii

So many Nintendo fans are waiting patiently for this - the sequel to what many hail as the best multiplayer game on Gamecube - and they’ll be happy to know that the developers have not messed with the winning formula too much. The control system is practically the same (the game is even compatible with the cube controller) and from the video above you can see that the hectic action hasn’t calmed at all.

DSbuttons now shipping internationally

On December 30th, 2006 by WiiWii

DSButtons.comYou may have read the post “Nintendo invitation badges” a week or so ago here on WiiWii. It mentioned the cool idea some DS players had had over in the States where, by way of themed badges, you notified possible opponents of games you are willing to play; on the bus, the tube etc.

At the time of writing the post, DSbuttons.com (the site where you can pick up a set of these badges) was not shipping to anywhere other than the US. Well, good news folks. One of the nice people at the site emailed me a few days ago to tell me that we can now all get our hands on them. They’re such nice people, in fact, that on the site they even suggest - because of the increased international shipping costs - that buyers pool their orders together to save on cash. I look forward to seeing some on the UK streets, and I look forward to beating some folks at MarioKart. Awesome.

Why 2007 can’t come fast enough: No More Heroes

On December 29th, 2006 by WiiWii

No More Heroes on WiiWii.tvAs big a fan I am of all the Nintendo cutesy characters and addictive mini-games sometimes I just wish I had a really meaty and more mature game to get my teeth into. No More Heroes is just such a game.

From the creators of (easily one of the best games on Nintendo Gamecube) Killer7 comes this stylish assassin-sim. The story revolves around Travis Touchdown (pictured) finding himself thrust into a world of murder and swordplay. After killing number eleven on the list of top assassins Travis then takes it upon himself to kill the remaining ten. It’s like mummy always said: “be the best”.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess – Hour #04

On December 29th, 2006 by WiiWii

Twilight Princess on Nintendo WiiAnd so our journey continues, friend. Or perhaps it is just beginning? The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, hour four, will tell all.

hours played 03.00
As the story begins to surface and my semi hand-in-hand tutorial few hours come to an end, I start to realise just how epic this game may turn out to be. I haven’t ever really left the (relative) safety of my small home, Ordon Village, yet and already I’ve been playing for three hours. Sure I had a little excursion into the shadow which a prompt guard put and end to all too quickly, but for some reason I don’t think that counts.

Although I’m home again, I’m not welcomed like I should be. That cheeky so and so Midna has left me in my wolf form until I get her a sword and shield. What on Earth (read: Hyrule) would I ever want those for? Anyone would think I’ve got a quest ahead of me or something.

Why 2007 can’t come fast enough: Super Mario Galaxy

On December 27th, 2006 by WiiWii

Super Mario Galaxy on WiiWii.tvWith a mere few days left in 2006 what better way to spend them than to pass the hours salivating over what exciting Wii goodness looms upon us in the new year. That, and recover after the excessive festivities.

Super Mario Galaxy kicks off our small yet essential list of WiiWii.tv reasons why 2007 can’t come fast enough.

Any Nintendo fan videogame fan should realise the impact that this game could have. Super Mario games consistently deliver and like Mario64 and others before it this promises to reinvent the series - and, perhaps, platform and 3D gaming itself - yet again. The game has already been described as “practically perfect” and “the new beginning for Mario” by lucky E306 goers who got to play the title earlier this year.

Transfer Miis from your Wii via Bluetooth (if you’re clever)

On December 20th, 2006 by Stuart Dredge

I lost track of this article when they started banging on about Bluetooth stacks, if I’m honest. But if you’re technically minded, it promises a way to transfer your Miis from your Wii to your PC and back again, as well as being able to trade them online.

I wish Nintendo had included this feature as standard in the console though, alongside things like the Mii Parade, which is smart. I’d love to be able to use my Mii as my Mac’s wallpaper, or as part of my email signature.

Hopefully someone will make this kind of functionality user-friendly (at least for dolts like me) sometime soon, if Nintendo doesn’t get round to it.

“Read my lips: No Game Drought” says Nintendo boss

On December 20th, 2006 by Stuart Dredge

Hmm. I wish Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime had backed up this promise a bit better though. In an interview with Newsweek, Reggie took aim at suggestions there might not be enough Triple-A new games on their way to Wii.

“How do I answer the question, ‘Will there be no drought?’ and ‘How will we make sure that there are fantastic titles for Wii?’ The answer is Zelda, Metroid and Mario. Which is a pretty darn good lineup.”

I wouldn’t argue with that. But given the issue is whether Wii can attract more big games than previous Nintendo consoles – which all had Zelda, Metroid and Mario – it’s not quite the convincing answer us Wii owners would wish for.
