Is Wii Sports a bit… boring?

golf_02.jpgFor those of us who’ve yet to get our hands on a Wii – and sheer naked envy means I WON’T be linking to all those US hacks gleefully posting videos of their first weekend of Wii gaming anytime soon) – Wii Sports has become a bit of a worry.

The alarm bells started ringing with IGN’s review this week, which basically says it plays well, but looks a bit rubbish, and hasn’t got much depth if you’re into your games. Which got me wondering, is the novelty of all this Wii-mote-waving going to wear off quickly once we’ve actually got the console? What’s more, IGN suggests that the boxing mini-game on Wii Sports is useless, and that the golf is plain frustrating.

Meanwhile, Kotaku is broadly in agreement with IGN, saying the boxing doesn’t work well, and saying tennis is “more annoying than fun”. That said, they like baseball, and love the golf and bowling mini-games. Meanwhile, HEXUS.gaming suggests it’s “more about the social interaction and the competition of playing with another person than the actual game itself”.

Lastly, Wired’s Games blog shouts “THE HELL WITH YOU, WII SPORTS GOLF!” before saying that bowling, tennis and boxing is quite cool, while baseball “kind of sucks”. The conclusion? Yep, “Wii Sports is going to best be played with and/or around other people.”

Seeing a pattern yet? I’m getting the distinct impression that Wii Sports isn’t that much fun on your own.  Which is kinda understandable, given Nintendo’s focus on social gaming, but at the same time, raises the fear that in a lot of these mini-game titles in particular, there’s not enough thought or effort going into ensuring they have rewarding solo modes too.

Hopefully I’m wrong though. Us Brits will have to wait and see.

Getting the mates and beers in on a Friday with a bit of Wii tennis, even if it is a bit naff, will be all kinds of raucous fun.

Who wants to wave a remote around and look like a spaz on their own when they can get laughed at by their friends?

Golf can be frustrating if you don’t know how to use the remote (ie follow on screen directions), but so far is my favorite sports game in the package so far. Putting is the hardest by far and takes a gentle touch, but if you remember my simple rule(s) for putting you won’t have much problem: the controller must be pointed at the floor. Swing the controller from hip to hip. Anything less will cause a no swing.

    Enjoy.

PS. Tennis rocks with 2 or more players… bring on the pints.

One of the guys in my dorm got a Wii at launch, and the most clamored thing to do is play Wii Sports. It’s no fun if you’re by yourself, but isn’t that the point? Tennis and Bowling are great, and the one shaky thing I would like to point out (other than graphics) is the Boxing motion sensing. Wii Sports is the best.

Well, Gee Whizz, I’m sorry, Wii is as dull as a tax audit. No good third party support, poor gfx, what games choice? Err, Mario, Zelda, Mario, Zzzzzz.. With little more in between.

Yawn.. Sorry folks, time for a nap.

I think you’re missing something here. Wii sports was a FREE PACK-IN GAME, and by my reckoning that means I technically payed zilch for it (despite other people’s moans and groans).

And for a game that cost me nothing, it’s awesome!

All the best thing’s in life are free. (except the crap stuff).
