Wii Preview: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

zelda.jpgWhat’s it all about?
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is arguably the most eagerly-anticipated launch game on the Wii console, as it follows the journey of hero Link as he battles to save the land of Hyrule, and of course, its beautiful princess Zelda, from a nasty ending. The game, the seventh in the series, falls chronologically decades after Ocarina of Time, but many years prior to The Wind Waker, if that makes any sense to you seasoned Zelda fans out there.

Should I be excited?
Yep, it is Officially Worth Creaming Your Pants Over, and that’s a direct quote from Miyamoto, the producer of the game. Err…Don’t quote us on that, though! It’s certainly a deviation from the art style seen in The Wind Waker, with a much more realistic, almost traditional quality. The best thing though is it’s slightly more darker than its predecessors, even earning itself a ‘T’ rating, for teen, due to the animated blood and fantasy violence. Which must be good, right? Right?

Does it do nifty stuff with the Wii controller?
But of course! The game is also being released on Game Cube the same day, so there are of course noteable advantages to playing it on the Wii. Users will use the Wii-mote with the Nunchuk attachment to not only control Link, but to aim and fire the bow, boomerang, and even to fish in the streams. The best feature, without a doubt though, is being able to swing the controller like a sword - a lot better than pretending it’s a gold club, no?

Any good multiplayer features?
Sadly, no, this is one of those games you can get away with playing in a darkened room all by yourself, pantsless, with a half-eaten cold tin of spaghetti next to you. Oh, and don’t forget the strawberry Nesquik!

What else should I know?
Although it’s already won numerous awards before even being released, there does seem to be a certain love/hate element to it, with traditional Zelda fans in uproar over the change in direction. It’s slowly dying away, although there’s still a slight dislike of the Wii-mote, with perhaps the older, more flabby Zelda fanboys worrying about the strenuous exercise they’ll be exerting on themselves with swinging the Wii-mote like a sword. Fanboys need not worry however, as a simple flick of the wrist will suffice, allowing you to keep all those tasty calories in your body, to be worked off next time you walk to the fridge for a Stella.
